We add buy-side STT (0.1%), stamp duty (0.015%) and brokerage to the purchase cost, then find the sell price that covers sell-side STT (0.1%), stamp duty (0.003%), brokerage and any other chargesThe result is your break-even selling price per shareEvery share you sell carries a hidden coupon of charges: STT at 0.1% on both buy and sell for delivery, stamp duty, exchange transaction charges, SEBI turnover fee and your broker's brokerage. Searches like IPO charges list India and STT charges on share selling spike every listing week because beginners discover these only after selling.
This calculator adds the buy-side burden (STT, stamp 0.015%, brokerage) to your purchase cost, then solves for the sell price where sell-side deductions (STT 0.1%, stamp 0.003%, brokerage) still leave you whole. The extra percent row shows how far above the issue price you must sell just to recover costs.
Two gaps to remember: DP debit charges of roughly 15 to 20 rupees per sell transaction and 18% GST on brokerage are not in this math, so add them for precision. Discount brokers charge flat or zero delivery brokerage, which is why the same trade breaks even lower there than with full-service brokers.
Because exchange charges, STT, stamp duty and brokerage are deducted on both buy and sell. You must sell slightly above the issue price just to recover costs.
Rates used are standard equity-delivery estimates (STT 0.1% each side, stamp 0.015%/0.003%). Your broker may differ slightly.
Securities Transaction Tax is 0.1% on both buy and sell for delivery trades. Intraday STT is different (0.025% on the sell side only).
No. Depository (CDSL/NSDL) debit charges of roughly ₹15–20 per sell transaction vary by broker, so add them separately for exact costing.
Discount brokers and full-service brokers charge different brokerage slabs and flat fees, so the same trade breaks even at slightly different prices.
IPO applications via ASBA or UPI have no application fee, so the issue price itself is your cost base before listing-day trading charges.
