How this calculator works

If you sell within 12 months of allotment the gain is Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG) taxed at 20% flatIf held 12 months or more it is Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG) taxed at 12.5% on gains above the ₹1.25 lakh exemption

Since the July 2024 Budget, anyone searching STCG tax rate equity finds a new answer: 20% flat for listed shares sold within 12 months, and 12.5% LTCG on gains above 1.25 lakh a year for holdings beyond a year. This calculator applies exactly that FY 2024-25 regime to your IPO profit.

Enter the profit and holding days. Under 365 days you get STCG at 20%; at 365-plus the 1.25 lakh exemption kicks in first and only the balance faces 12.5%. The net-profit row shows what actually stays with you, the number that matters before you celebrate a listing gain.

Two practical notes for IPO profit ITR filing queries: report listed-equity gains in Schedule CG with allotment and sell notes preserved, and remember the old 15% and 10% rates apply only to pre-Budget-era transactions still being regularised. FAQs

What is the STCG rate on IPO shares?

From FY 2024-25, short-term capital gains on listed equity (held less than 12 months) are taxed at 20% flat.

How much LTCG is exempt?

Long-term gains up to ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year are exempt; the balance is taxed at 12.5%.

What were the old STCG/LTCG rates?

Before FY 2024-25, listed-equity STCG was 15% and LTCG was 10% on gains above ₹1 lakh. The July 2024 Budget raised them to 20% and 12.5% (above ₹1.25 lakh).

How are IPO gains reported in ITR?

Listed-equity gains go in Schedule CG of your income-tax return — short-term if sold within 12 months of allotment, long-term otherwise. Keep your allotment and sell contract notes.

Do NRIs pay the same IPO tax rates?

The headline rates are similar but NRIs face separate TDS deduction by the broker/payer and different filing rules, so NRIs should confirm with a chartered accountant.

What about shares bought before 31 Jan 2018?

Gains accrued up to 31 January 2018 were grandfathered using that day's highest traded price as cost. This matters only for very old holdings, not fresh IPOs.
