Gold Rate Today 2026 Hits Record Rs 1,55,990: Buy Now or Wait Till Tomorrow?

Gold rate today 2026 at record Rs 1.55 lakh per 10g. 24K vs 22K price, city rates, SIP vs gold maths and what to watch next.

Key takeaways
  • 24K gold quoted near Rs 1.55 to 1.60 lakh per 10 gram on 19 to 21 September 2026, city-wise; 22K near Rs 1.42 lakh.
  • Trigger mix: US Fed hike on 16 Sep to 3.75 to 4 percent, rupee near 95.89, Brent above 100 dollars.
  • Jewellery costs = metal + making (8 to 20 percent) + 3 percent GST; ETF route needs a demat account and avoids making charges.
  • Festive buyers: stagger purchases; investors: watch 7 Oct RBI policy, 10 Oct AMFI SIP data and Diwali demand.

Gold shops in Zaveri Bazaar opened on Sunday morning to a familiar question. The board said 24K near Rs 15,599 per gram in Delhi, 22K near Rs 14,285 per gram, and customers asked the same thing in Chennai, Kolkata and Ranchi. Is this the top, or does Dhanteras take it higher?

Short answer. Gold is at a record zone in September 2026. Live price blogs dated 19 to 21 September report 24K between Rs 1,55,840 and Rs 1,60,292 per 10 gram depending on city, with silver near Rs 2,55,000 per kg. The last time buyers saw this pace, festive demand plus a weak rupee did the pushing. This time a US Fed hike joined in.

Why gold jumped this week: Fed, rupee and crude fear

Three things hit together. First, the US Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points on 16 September 2026 to 3.75 to 4 percent, its first hike since 2023, with officials signalling one more hike in 2026. The US 10 year yield touched 5 percent, a 19 year high. When US yields jump, global money turns cautious and safe haven buying in gold rises. Spot gold traded near 4,390 to 4,414 dollars per ounce in the same window.

Second, the rupee stayed under pressure. It closed near 95.89 to the dollar on 18 September, after an intraday record low above 96.10 earlier in the month. India imports almost all its gold, so a weak rupee lifts the local price even when the global price is flat. A 1 rupee fall adds roughly Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,700 per 10 gram at current levels, before tax.

Third, crude stayed above 100 dollars. Brent traded between 101.70 and 105.83 dollars on 18 to 21 September, with the Indian crude basket averaging 109.76 dollars in September against 90.19 in August. Costlier oil widens the trade gap and feeds inflation talk, which again supports gold. Add September foreign portfolio outflows of about Rs 20,974 crore between 1 and 18 September, and you get the classic risk off mix that lifts the yellow metal. Gold rate today city-wise: 24K vs 22K maths buyers miss

Headline rates confuse because cities quote differently. Here is what public price trackers and business dailies reported for 19 to 21 September 2026. Use them as zone markers, not as your final bill, because your jeweller adds making charges and GST.

How to read this fast. 24K means 99.9 percent pure. 22K means 916 hallmark, or 91.6 percent pure, the standard for jewellery. One sovereign in Tamil Nadu and Kerala is 8 gram. At Rs 15,599 per gram for 24K, one sovereign of pure gold metal is about Rs 1,24,792 before making and tax. The same weight in 22K is about Rs 1,14,280 before making and tax. Making charges of 8 to 20 percent plus 3 percent GST sit on top, which is why two shops show different finals for the same board rate.

Tamil Nadu buyers often ask per sovereign with making. Ask for three numbers separately. Metal rate per gram, making per gram or percent, and GST. If a shop bundles them, you cannot compare.

Sovereign, coin, ETF, MCX: which route costs what

Physical gold feels simple till you add costs. A 10 gram coin at Rs 1,55,990 metal plus 5 percent making plus 3 percent GST lands near Rs 1,68,700. A necklace with 14 percent making lands higher still. Resale brings a cut too, often 2 to 5 percent on making, plus purity test deductions for old jewellery without hallmark.

That is why many first time buyers now split. Festive and wedding gold stays physical. Investment gold moves to a Gold ETF or gold fund, which needs a demat account and a trading account for ETF units, or just a mutual fund SIP for a gold fund with no demat needed. You pay expense ratio of 0.4 to 0.8 percent a year instead of making charges, and you get market linked resale with no purity argument.

RouteUpfront extraYearly costBest for
Jewellery (22K, hallmark)Making 8 to 20 percent + 3 percent GSTLocker 0 to 0.5 percentWear + festive use
Coin / bar (24K)Making 2 to 6 percent + 3 percent GSTLocker 0 to 0.5 percentGift, long hold

Gold fund via SIPZero entryExpense 0.5 to 1.0 percentMonthly savers, no demat
Sovereign Gold Bond (old issues)Secondary market priceZero + 2.5 percent interest (old terms)Secondary buyers only, no fresh issue now

A practical rule from Mumbai jewellers. If you will wear it, pay making happily and pick light flexible designs where making per gram is lower. If you will lock it, stop paying wearing costs and use the paper route. Mixing the two goals in one purchase is where buyers lose.

SIP vs gold vs FD: 5 year maths without hype

August 2026 gave a clean comparison. AMFI data released on 10 and 11 September showed gross SIP inflows at a record Rs 32,297 crore, with equity inflows up 19 percent month on month to Rs 29,329 crore. Small cap funds took a record Rs 7,973 crore, mid cap Rs 6,989 crore. SIP accounts crossed 10 crore. This happened while Nifty and Sensex fell 1.2 to 1.5 percent in August. Retail kept buying the dip through the mutual fund SIP route. Our SIP inflows story breaks the category split.

Gold did the opposite job in the same phase. It held value while equities wobbled, which is why portfolios that paired both slept better. A Rs 10,000 per month saver from 2021 to 2026 in a broad equity fund rode two crashes and still compounded, while the same amount in gold compounded slower but smoother. Fixed deposits at 6.6 to 6.75 percent for special tenures (SBI Amrit Vrishti 444 day, Central Bank specials) gave certainty but trailed both after tax for higher slabs.

Costs change the winner. Equity fund expense of 1 to 1.5 percent for regular plans, gold fund expense near 0.7 percent, physical gold making of 12 percent on entry. On a 5 year hold, a 12 percent entry cut needs gold to beat equity by over 2 percent a year just to catch up. That single line settles most family debates. Wear gold, invest through low cost routes.

Demat and trading account route: how beginners actually start

Search interest for best demat account for beginners keeps rising with 14 crore plus demat accounts in 2026. The query families are stable. Zerodha vs Groww vs Upstox vs Angel One on brokerage and AMC, how to open a free demat account online, and what documents are needed. For gold, the flow is simple. Open a demat account and trading account for ETF units on NSE or BSE, or skip demat and start a gold fund SIP in any mutual fund app with PAN, Aadhaar eKYC and bank mandate.

Check three things before you pick. Annual maintenance charge (many discount brokers charge 300 to 500 rupees after year one), ETF liquidity (pick large Gold ETFs with tight bid ask), and whether your SIP date sits after salary credit to avoid mandate fails. Keep nominees updated. Digital gold wallets look easy but carry spread and limit issues on large redemptions, so large sums fit ETFs and funds better.

What should investors watch next: 3 dated triggers

Do not guess the top. Track these three prints, all dated, all public.

1. 7 October 2026, RBI policy morning. Repo stands at 5.25 percent since April 2026. SBI Research and HSBC flagged a possible 25 basis point hike in October plus another in December to 5.75 percent if August CPI at 4.82 percent stays sticky. A hike usually supports the rupee at the margin, which can cool local gold even if global gold is firm. A hold keeps the festive flow strong.

2. 10 October 2026 week, AMFI September SIP data. August set Rs 32,297 crore. If September holds above Rs 30,000 crore despite Nifty near 23,346 and Sensex near 74,295 after six straight weekly falls, equity dip buying is intact and gold demand stays balanced. A sharp SIP drop would push more defensive money toward gold.

3. 18 to 21 October 2026, Dhanteras and Diwali buying. India festive demand is the swing factor for premiums. In past record years, local premiums widened Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 per 10 gram in the festive week even when global prices paused. If Brent stays above 100 dollars and the rupee stays above 95, jewellers pass the full import cost, and waiting till Diwali week costs more than staggered buying now.

Frequently asked questions

What is gold rate today per 10 gram for 24K?

Live blogs on 21 September 2026 report 24K gold around Rs 1,55,840 to Rs 1,60,292 per 10 gram depending on city, with Delhi near Rs 15,599 per gram. Rates move by city and jeweller, so check your city quote before you pay.

Should I buy gold now or wait till tomorrow?

Nobody can time the top. If it is for a wedding or festive use in October and November, staged buying beats waiting. If it is pure investment, compare Gold ETF and mutual fund SIP on cost and tax before you decide.

Is 22K or 24K gold better for jewellery?

22K (916 hallmark) is the standard for jewellery because pure 24K is too soft for daily wear. 24K is for coins, bars and ETFs. Making charges and 3 percent GST apply on top of the metal price in both cases.

Is SIP better than gold for 5 years?

Equity SIP has beaten gold in most 5 year growth phases but with sharp falls in between. Gold has protected during crashes. Many retail portfolios pair a monthly mutual fund SIP with a small 5 to 10 percent gold share instead of picking one winner.

Gold ETF vs physical gold: which costs less for investors?

For pure investment, Gold ETF or gold fund usually costs less. You pay 0.4 to 0.8 percent yearly expense instead of 8 to 20 percent making plus 3 percent GST on jewellery, and resale happens at market price with no purity deduction. Physical gold wins only when you need to wear it or gift it.

What will decide gold price before Diwali 2026?

Three dated prints: RBI policy on 7 October, AMFI September SIP data in the 10 October week, and Dhanteras to Diwali demand from 18 to 21 October. A rupee back above 95 or Brent below 100 dollars can cool local rates even if global gold stays firm.
